Deviated septum repair can be done easily nowadays with the evolution of science as well as technology. Many opt for the rhinoplasty for giving a different look to the nose. ON the other hand, it has been seen that few who do require getting the nose surgery done for some or the other medical reasons like for e.g. injuries, accidents, or natural deviated septum. Deviated septum repair is essential because it causes difficulty in breathing and hence it best of the repair of the same is done as soon as possible. But again of the same is required, this type of operation is very much different from the natural one and one needs to talk to the doctor. Read on to know more about Deviated septum repair.

Deviated septum repair: The details

Deviated septum repair is a situation when nasal septum of the nostrils is deviated or is crooked. Normally the nasal septum which is present in the individuals is straight one which but in situations when the same is crooked, causes a lot of issues for the individual in breathing. This nasal septum is basically composed or made up of both bones as well as cartilage. When this is crooked then it not only leads to difficulty in the breathing for the individual concerned, but also leads to ‘apnea’ as well as ‘snoring’ while one breathes. Thus the only option for the same for all those individuals who suffer from the same is the Deviated septum repair. But again the other fact which is also the reality is that, this condition is not that serious which requires some immediate nose surgery, but is always good of Deviated septum repair is conducted.

Deviated septum repair: Get the basics right

Deviated septum repair can be done but before that it is essential that one gets basics of the entire process because it is essential that one should know about it before one encroaches upon the same. When you move to visit any doctor, you would find that the same would examine the section as well as the region with the help of an endoscope to ensure that the ideal option is resorted too. Deviated septum repair would normally lead to few simple steps and is not any type of major operation which has to be scared off. Read on to know more about Deviated septum repair.

Deviated septum repair: The further details

Deviated septum repair is basically done by giving general or the other option being the local anesthesia as per the individual’s preference. The operation lasts no more than two to two and half hours and is basically done on the out-patient basis like what is done in the case of other surgeries. Deviated septum repair which is done differs from one patient to the other and hence it is not necessary that what one is subjected to while getting operated might not be the case for the other deviated septum patient. Hope you might have had a fair amount of knowledge on Deviated septum repair by now.

Deviated septum nose problem refers to a misshapen septum region of the nose. The septum is the central portion of the nose composed together of bone and cartilage, separating the two nostrils from one another. In most people the septum is fairly centrally placed adhering to the rules of physical symmetry. However, some people suffer from the deviated septum nose problem where the septum is deviated or bent. This might be a result of severe nasal trauma or it can even be a genetic problem. In fact, nasal septum deviation is categorized into two categories, based on the nature of deviation. The first is the type where the lower end of the septum is dislocated and thereby is pushed to one side. The other type of deformation, the more severe one, implies that the nose is deformed in a bow shaped or s shaped deviation However, if you are suffering from the same problem, then you should be pleased to know that there are available treatments for rectifying the problem of deviated septum nose.

Deviated septum nose problems

Deviated septum nose, apart from looking asymmetrical in mirror, also results in a number of problems. The first problem of course is the blockage of nostrils, either one nostril or both of them. The fact that such nostril blockages cannot be totally removed without surgery means that the patient has to suffer from the blockage of nostrils until the surgery. Over the counter nasal sprays and prescription drugs fail to encounter such kind of blockage because this is not due to the congestion of the nose, but instead due to a deviated septum nose. Since the deviated septum interferes with the drainage of catarrh from the sinuses, the deviated septum can act as a reason for recurrent sinus symptoms. In addition, the deviated septum nose can also block the drainage of mucus from the middle ear, thereby causing the glue ear problems. These are the key problems associated with deviated septum nose.

Deviated septum nose reasons

Deviated septum nose can occur due to a variety of reasons. The most common reason is a serious blow to the nose that can dislocate the septum and deviate it. Sometimes the nasal trauma can also be a form of congenital disorder, arising due to the compression of the nose during childbirth. Genetic connective tissue disorders like the Marfans syndrome and the Ehlers Danlos syndrome can also be reasons for deviated septum nose.

Deviated septum nose treatment

Deviated septum nose treatment does involve treatment of the congestion of the nose. The doctor may suggest nasal decongestants to treat it, but it should be remembered that these decongestants should be used with caution. Misuse or overuse of decongestant spray can in fact cause rebound action and the congestion can reoccur in such a manner that the decongestants will not be effective any more. Instead, if you are facing the deviated septum nose problem, then you should definitely consider a surgical procedure to get the deviation rectified. Sub mucous resection and septoplasty are the two types of surgical treatment for deviated septum nose.

Operation for Snoring

Snoring can be quite annoying to other people whose sleep gets disturbed by sounds. In fact, some marriages have also ended in divorce because of snoring. There is, however, an operation for snoring and it’s widely believed to have worked wonders in solving this common problem.

We have to first understand the causes behind snoring, which is due to turbulences in the flow of air as we breathe in and out during our sleep. When a person is heavily asleep, the back of their throat tends to narrow down, and as a result this area (through which the air passes) can cause some vibrations to the tissue surrounding the opening, leading to snoring. This narrowing can be found in different areas such as the nose, mouth or throat. It is seen that after consuming alcohol a person is more likely to snore heavily. Some mistakenly stereotype that fat people, because of heavy weight, snore excessively but even a thin woman with a tiny neck can snore just as heavily. Both men and women who are heavy snorers are equally as likely to undergo an operation for snoring to cure the condition.

People who have undergone an operation for snoring

have experienced the immense relief of getting rid of this irritating disorder. The aim of the operation for snoring is to both relieve the person snoring and give a peaceful night’s sleep to the person near the snorer. But there are some who still face the problem, even after surgery, which is quite disappointing.
The doctor will do a sleep analysis while you are at the doctor’s office, which will help to determine and understand your disorder from the root cause. Once they have identified the problem, they will go ahead with the operation for snoring to cure you of your snoring forever. When a person decides that they will go in for the surgery to remove the irritating tissue inside the throat, they must realize the consequences of the after-operation period, which are quite painful and can take a long time from which to recover. The cost involved in this operation is also quite high. There are not many people keen on this operation simply because of the excruciating after-operation pain and high prices.

If one doesn’t want to go the route having operation for snoring

, then they have to make constructive changes in his or her lifestyle, as it’s seen that most of the snorers either drink a lot or are into smoking. In fact, researchers have proven that those people who constantly smoke or drink end up being heavy snorers, as there is airway blockage inside their throat. You will be surprised to find when you quit smoking and drinking, your snoring often disappears naturally, without any medications or surgery necessary. You will be able to lead a happy and healthy lifestyle with your family for the rest of your life, free of the disturbance of snoring.

The first thing that comes to mind, when someone asks about septoplasty surgery is the idea that it’s another complicated surgery. But it is not so, in fact this surgery is carried out to correct the area between the nasal cavities, which is called the nasal septum.

What is Septoplasty Surgery?

Septoplasty surgery is basically done on those people who are having breathing problems, as with this surgery they will be able to breathe easily. It is quite a simple operation where the septum is repaired, or correction is made inside the wall of your nose. It generally takes around 8 weeks for a person to completely recover from this surgery. One will also not face any kind of complications with septoplasty surgery, as you will not find any kind of discoloration, swelling or infection to your outer nose. In very rare cases, one will find the patient suffers from heavy loss of blood which can stay up to 2 weeks, and might need packing; otherwise splinting of the inside of the nose is quite common.

This surgery does not require you to stay in the hospital for long time. You are allowed to leave for home as soon as the effects of anesthesia wear off. Sometimes there is a need for the packing of the nose; otherwise generally it is not necessary. The person can get the packing removed in 2 to 3 days. After septoplasty surgery, it is quite common to experience some kind of blockage in your nose as you are recovering. This blockage will seem similar to when you have a cold. Your breathing might be also affected, but one should not worry, since it takes maximum eight weeks for your nose to open up and remain clear.

Septoplasty Surgery Recovery

The doctor will advise you to take the use of nasal spray not only for faster recovery from septoplasty surgery, but to also ensure that your nostrils remain perfectly moisturized and don’t dry up. It also decreases drainage, bleeding and helps to open up your nose. One should continue using the nasal spray until the nose bleeding stops and limit the nasal spray use for three weeks only. Following septoplasty surgery, one should not take any strenuous physical activity such as exercise as it adds strain on the incision. For the first five days, you should not lift heavy objects but you can resume your daily activities after the 6th to 8th week. The medicines prescribed by the doctors for your recovery, such as pain killers and antibiotics, can be extremely intoxicating and a person experiences drowsiness, so it is advisable that he should avoid drinking alcohol while driving, as it could prove fatal. Do not take Tylenol to relieve yourself of pain as it causes excessive bleeding from the nose.

After the septoplasty surgery, one should not miss out on his regular checkups, so that the doctor can monitor your recovery process and let you know when you can resume strenuous physical exercises. You should also report to the doctor immediately if you notice any kind of infection such as fever and take medications as per the doctor’s orders.

Septal Deviation Symptoms

Not being able to breathe properly is certainly the most disturbing physical condition for any of us and can be one of the major septal deviation symptoms. Our nose is the part of our body that decides whether one is alive or dead; to be specific, it is the part of our bodies which allows us to intake oxygen for our body through the passageways and let us breathe to life. However, it can also be the budding ground for various septal deviation symptoms which occur due to deviation or crookedness of our septum inside our nostrils. Nasal septum is the wall which divides our two nostrils and consists of cartilage in the front part and thin bones at the back side of our nose.

Septal deviation symptoms

start showing up when our septum develops deviation inside our nose due to unwanted growth of the septum or bent septum inside our nostrils, which leads to blockage of oxygen entry through our nostrils. As a result, we start experiencing certain disturbances and discomforts which can be termed as septal deviation symptoms. The first of all septal deviation symptoms is difficulty in breathing leading to breathlessness which is often mistaken as worse conditions, like asthma or bronchitis, by many patients. Hence it is always advisable by doctors to go for a medical scrutiny before jumping to any kind of health-related conclusions. Breathing trouble due to septal deviation symptoms is known as blocked nose syndrome, which creates major sleep disturbances leading to sleeping disorders and apnea. It is but obvious to feel irritated and frustrated for not being able to sleep after a long and hard day full of work.

This obstruction created by blocked nose does not only hold us back from free breathing but also lets us lose precious sleep over it, leading to fatigue and weaknesses. This is one of the septal deviation symptoms which get more manifested with patients having a history of cold allergies and with patients prone to catching quick colds resulting in respiratory tract infections. Nosebleeds are another one of septal deviation symptoms wherein the nose bleeds after the septal area becomes dry and cold inside. Another form of septal deviation symptoms is facial pain which happens when the pain occurring in the nasal septum comes in contact with the other adjoining muscles including your face and nose.

One of many septal deviation symptoms

is the recurring sinusitis infection which happens due to blocked mucus passage. It can lead to facial pain, foul discharge and nasal obstruction resulting in major breathing troubles. Last but not least, snoring and noisy breathing during sleep is also one of the most common septal deviation symptoms and can cause much embarrassment to the patient suffering. Keeping all these symptoms in mind, we should be grateful that there exists types of surgery which help us get rid of all these nasal ailments within few minutes, which in turn can help us breathe freely without any obstruction.

What is a deviated septum?

It is a very common occurrence nowadays but most of us may not realize it. In such a situation, your nasal septum (the skinny tissue wall separating the nostrils) is not centrally positioned in your nose, and is therefore deviated.

This nasal septum basically consists of 2 parts, one being the hard bony area and the other being the cartilage which lies at the end of the nose. This cartilage is elastic and hence can be easily bent. If the septum is moved to the other side, then it can stop the flow of air as well as mucus within your nose. A deviated septum can cause various diseases.

A deviated septum

could actually be an inborn occurrence or one which may result due to an injury or accident. Due to this deviated septum if there is reduction in the space of the nasal region then it can block or stop the secretions of sinus as it is normally are excreted via nose. We all know that if the body is stopped from excreting its wastes, then the chances of infection within the body gets increased. The wastes could be of any nature, but if they are prevented it does effect the body adversely.
Few of the most common symptoms when deciding what is a deviated septum are complexities in breathing, jamming of nose while breathing, bleeding of nose frequently, infections if sinus, head-aches, etc.

Deviated Septum Surgery

Treatment for this deviated septum is normally done surgically and the procedure is termed or known as ‘septoplasty’. The type of the surgery would depend upon the imperfection present and the amount of the surrounding structures which are affected due to it. In some situations it has been seen that only the cleft part is affected and in some the ‘maxillary-sinuses’ are affected. Apart from this the other types of abnormalities which are found are the ‘maxillary-fistulas’ , unwanted space in between the maxillary-sinus and the cavity (oral). All of these can be cured surgically. The surgery which takes place basically consists of removing the imperfect portions of the nasal septum and in some situations they are once again aligned with the same. To prevent making cuts on the nose, the surgery is done through the nostrils. Splits are used or some type of packing to keep the repaired tissue in place once it gets healed. One can perform ‘septoplasty’ in any doctor chamber or office when the conditions are not very serious as well as in hospitals.

Before the surgery takes place the doctor or the nurse would provide you with the instructions which have to be followed post surgery on what is a deviated septum and the care which have to be taken. They also tell you when to stop eating for the preparation before surgery. If you do have any medications which have the contents of ‘aspirin,’ they need to be stopped from consumption many days ahead of the surgery. Apart from surgery, there have been many alternative treatments which have been known for years to work well too. For example things like soothing saline drops, sprays and more would help in lubricating the nose to allow the discharge.

Deviated Septum Operation

The deviated septum operation has given us the option of undergoing minor surgery to help get rid of internal nasal disorders or malfunctioning due to unwanted muscle growth inside the passage of our nostrils. Patients who have benefited from the deviated septum operation are growing in numbers and those patients have high satisfaction levels. The operation is not only minor in nature, but also cures the major causes of irritation and physical inconveniences. When it comes to knowing about deviated septum operation, it is mandatory to know how it helps patients with nasal disorders that ultimately lead to breathing problems and many other disturbances.

The two nasal passages in either side of our nostrils are separated by a wall called the nasal septum. This wall consists of thin bone and cartilage in the back and in the front, respectively. Often our septum may have slight or major deviation and unwanted growth, which is either inherited at birth or can develop during normal childhood growth or puberty. Deviated septum operation corrects any deviation that causes various disturbances in the process of normal breathing. Those symptoms can include breathlessness, blocked nose, inability to breathe properly, sleep apnea and snoring.

The septum, which can also be deviated by an injury, is completely corrected with a deviated septum operation (which can be performed in almost every major hospital dealing with ENT issues). As a matter of fact, deviated septum operation is an option that a large number of patients seeking corrected septum choose to undergo. Apart from treating deviated septum, deviated septum operation is also suggested to patients having other nose-malfunctioning related ailments like sinusitis, nasal inflammation or bleeding and nasal polyps. The method used in a deviated septum operation is called ‘steptoplasty,’ which treats and takes care of chronic nose-related ailments discussed in the earlier part of the article and puts all disturbances to breathing, smelling or sleeping to rest for good.

How long does a deviated septum operation last?

The operation lasts for 60-90 minutes and is a minor process which is followed by a general examination of the nasal passage with the help of an endoscope. The patient is put under local or general anesthesia to enable the doctor to carry out the operation successfully. The doctors performing deviated septum operation take care of the fine and soft tissues (called nasal mucosa) before carrying out the other procedures necessary for the successful correction of the nasal wall. The operation has provided relief for many patients who have been suffering from breathing troubles which were causing them to lose sleep.
