Septoplasty Surgery
The first thing that comes to mind, when someone asks about septoplasty surgery is the idea that it’s another complicated surgery. But it is not so, in fact this surgery is carried out to correct the area between the nasal cavities, which is called the nasal septum.
What is Septoplasty Surgery?
Septoplasty surgery is basically done on those people who are having breathing problems, as with this surgery they will be able to breathe easily. It is quite a simple operation where the septum is repaired, or correction is made inside the wall of your nose. It generally takes around 8 weeks for a person to completely recover from this surgery. One will also not face any kind of complications with septoplasty surgery, as you will not find any kind of discoloration, swelling or infection to your outer nose. In very rare cases, one will find the patient suffers from heavy loss of blood which can stay up to 2 weeks, and might need packing; otherwise splinting of the inside of the nose is quite common.

This surgery does not require you to stay in the hospital for long time. You are allowed to leave for home as soon as the effects of anesthesia wear off. Sometimes there is a need for the packing of the nose; otherwise generally it is not necessary. The person can get the packing removed in 2 to 3 days. After septoplasty surgery, it is quite common to experience some kind of blockage in your nose as you are recovering. This blockage will seem similar to when you have a cold. Your breathing might be also affected, but one should not worry, since it takes maximum eight weeks for your nose to open up and remain clear.
Septoplasty Surgery Recovery
The doctor will advise you to take the use of nasal spray not only for faster recovery from septoplasty surgery, but to also ensure that your nostrils remain perfectly moisturized and don’t dry up. It also decreases drainage, bleeding and helps to open up your nose. One should continue using the nasal spray until the nose bleeding stops and limit the nasal spray use for three weeks only. Following septoplasty surgery, one should not take any strenuous physical activity such as exercise as it adds strain on the incision. For the first five days, you should not lift heavy objects but you can resume your daily activities after the 6th to 8th week. The medicines prescribed by the doctors for your recovery, such as pain killers and antibiotics, can be extremely intoxicating and a person experiences drowsiness, so it is advisable that he should avoid drinking alcohol while driving, as it could prove fatal. Do not take Tylenol to relieve yourself of pain as it causes excessive bleeding from the nose.
After the septoplasty surgery, one should not miss out on his regular checkups, so that the doctor can monitor your recovery process and let you know when you can resume strenuous physical exercises. You should also report to the doctor immediately if you notice any kind of infection such as fever and take medications as per the doctor’s orders.
